Along the Coast to Leitir Fura

June 13, 2024

At the eastern end of my visit to the Àird na Meacan area, the next tetrad looked tempting for a very old and vague record of Mertensia maritima (Oysterplant). Yesterday I went to have a look, but while there was indeed suitable-looking habitat there was no Mertensia. However, I added three more plants to the list for the 10 km square NG71:

  • Carex arenaria (Sand Sedge) Uncommon on Skye, the nearest record being at Camasunary, 22.5 km away as the rook flies. This patch is not obviously rooted in sand, though there may be some below the rocks.
  • Cotoneaster bullatus (Hollyberry Cotoneaster). Just one by the track on the way home – not especially welcome as it is a bit invasive. However, lots of insects like it.
  • Salix x multinervis (S. aurita x cinerea) – unsurprising, as I probably often fail to record this hybrid amongst its parents

Coming up from the shore to the main track that connects Kinloch and Leiter Fura I came across a good patch of Ceratocapnos claviculata (Climbing Corydalis) deep in a tangle of bracken and brambles. This is not common locally and is often associated with bracken.

As usual, I was chasing micromoths, bugs and anything else that took my fancy. Some highlights:

There were lots of signs of otter activity, notably this pool with several recently used spraint sites:

Doire Domhain, Raasay

June 4, 2024

Doire Domhain is an abandoned township on the east side of the island that I hadn’t visited for quite a long time. I checked up on one of the island’s populations of Ophioglossum azoricum (Small Adder’s-tongue) that I hadn’t visited for 15 years. It seems to be doing well, with about 200 minuscule plants in peaty ground on the top of sea cliffs. I also realised that I have probably under-recorded Veronica arvensis (Wall Speedwell) from this habitat.

Elsewhere the Early Marsh-orchids (Dactylorhiza incarnata) were just coming out.

Dactylorhiza incarnata

By way of bugs, there were Tingis cardui bugs in Cirsium vulgare (Spear Thistle) flowers and I netted a Philaenus spumarius nymph – a species I commonly see as an adult.

A psyllid I swept off a rowan seems likely to be Cacopsylla sorbi but it was a male and my favourite bug expert is unwilling to commit as Cacopsylla mali males are very similar. The nearest apple tree (host for Cacopsylla mali) is 7.5 km away. A sawfly from the same tree looks like Tenthredo ferruginea but I am not sufficiently skilled to be certain.

It was a good day for micro-moths:

There is probably only one previous record in the vice-county for Hedya atropunctana and Amphisbatis incongruella, if right, would be new to the west of Scotland. I am consulting on this one!

Finally, I think this caddis fly may be Philopotamus montanus, one I have had before not very far away.

Àird na Meacan, Kinloch – Part 2: Inverts

June 4, 2024

There were lots of ichneumonids around, perhaps all of one kind, but I had other fish to fry. Bugs featured largely, with the following six noted, two of which need expert help:

There were also nymphs of the psyllid, Trioza remota in pit mines on oak leaves.

Micromoths included Chrysoteuchia culmella (Garden Grass-moth), Glyphipterix thrasonella (Eyed Rush Moth) and Micropterix calthella (Plain Pollen-moth).

The Glyphipterix thrasonella (Eyed Rush Moth) has very few records locally and has the habit of flicking its wings when at rest.

Two macro moths with not many records locally were:

A couple of common hoverflies, a couple of snipe flies, Phytomyza ilicis mines on Holly, plus one other fly that needs better determination than I can give it, complete my list for the day.

Àird na Meacan, Kinloch – Part 1: Plants

June 2, 2024

Yesterday I went to Àird na Meacan near Kinloch on Skye. I was hoping to re-find two plants not recorded in the 10 km square NG71 since before 2000. In the event, I found four plants in that category plus a native plant that was completely new to the hectad:

Aira caryophyllea (Silver Hair-grass) (1996, no grid reference better than NG71)
Eupatorium cannabinum (Hemp-agrimony) (1973)
Geum urbanum (Wood Avens) (1987)
Torilis japonica (Upright Hedge-parsley) (1973) (A SHARPP target)

Sonchus arvensis (Perennial Sow-thistle) (New)

Other highlights included new tetrads for locally infrequent plants such as Honckenya peploides (Sea Sandwort), Leymus arenarius (Lyme-grass) and the slightly more frequent Carex otrubae (False Fox-sedge).

Moths in May

June 2, 2024

I added 15 species of moth to the West Suisnish list for May of which two were completely new to the list: Least Black Arches and the micromoth Pammene rhediella (Fruitlet Mining Tortrix).

Out and about on Skye and Raasay, the highlight was Lobesia littoralis (Shore Marble) from near Gillean on Skye.
