Plant Matters

David’s Epipactis helleborine (Broad-leaved Helleborine) has emerged near Portree, though the Scilla verna (Spring Squill) turned out to be a false trail. A recent report of Vicia sepium (Bush Vetch) in Portree turned out on inspection to be the variety ochroleuca, a first for the west coast of Scotland.

I visited Loch nan Learg, also not far from Portree, and re-found Carex lasiocarpa (Slender Sedge) last recorded there in 1972 and the first record in NG44 since 1984.

Loch nan Learg

The sedge is in a marshy area along with some deceptively narrow-leaved Carex rostrata (Bottle Sedge) on the west side of the loch i.e. just in front of the loch in the image. I had accidentally left my camera at home and had to rely on my phone with which I failed to get a decent image of C. lasiocarpa.

The loch had Palmate Newts and on the nearby moors I noted several frogs and had a fine view of a Golden Eagle. Inverts can wait for another post.
