New Plant Finds

Joanna has found an area in Portree with several plants not normally found here such as Pimpinella saxifraga (Burnet-saxifrage), Origanum vulgare (Wild Marjoram) and Echium vulgare (Viper’s-bugloss). The first of these is new to the vice-county. We are wondering how this collection, also including the Skye native Galium verum (Lady’s Bedstraw) and the occasional neophyte Barbarea intermedia (Medium-flowered Winter-cress), has got there – it surely involves human intervention in some way.

On a less spectacular scale Seth, Neil and I spotted Sonchus arvensis (Perennial Sow-thistle) on the roadside south of Portree. This may not sound of much interest, but in this part of the world this plant is almost exclusively coastal. This was some way from the coast and a new 10 km square record for NG43.
