Mike Ingram, the Reserve Manager, has found two spikes of the Nationally Scarce orchid, Spiranthes romanzoffiana (Irish Lady’s-tresses) on Rum. This is the first record for the vice-county and a plant that I have long hoped to see here as it is in adjacent vice-counties.
Excellent news on a wet afternoon!

Can you comment about the habitat? I wonder if there are any similar habitats on Skye.

On Mull I have seen it on old lazy beds. The Mid-Ebudes RPR says “It prefers wet grassland near the sea, usually on gently-sloping ground where the surplus water can run off”. I have seen it in SW Scotand on the stony, partially vegetated shore of a freshwater loch. But NOW is the time to see it!

Wow! that’s great. I wonder if they have changed the management of the place where it grows recently, or whether a seed just blew in from somewhere?
